The great and beautiful GRAVES wine region starts north of Bordeaux at the « Jalle de Blanquefort » and finishes upstream from Langon on the Garonne. The river constitutes the eastern limit of the vineyard along its entire length, while the western boundary is formed by the vast and splendid pine forest of the Landes, which also protects it from climatic extremes.

The wines of GRAVES are unique in France in bearing the name of their soil : « Las Grabas de Bourdeus », literally « the Gravels of Bordeaux ». The great age and originality of this name is a reminder of the major role played by the land in determining the quality of GRAVES wine.

Three distinct « Appellations Contrôlées » exist in the GRAVES region : the appellations : GRAVES et PESSAC-LEOGNAN produce red and dry white wines and the appellation GRAVES SUPERIEURES is reserved for sweet white wine.
A classification established in 1953 and completed in 1959 designates 16 classed growths, producing red and/or white wines. |
